A Journey Through Time: The Palestinian Wedding Comes to Life in Nablus Old City

The historic streets of Nablus Old City became the setting for a journey through Palestinian memory and tradition as Sharek Youth Forum brought “A Journey Through Time” to Nablus through a celebration of the Palestinian wedding and its rich cultural heritage.

The initiative invited the community to experience the traditions that have accompanied Palestinian weddings across generations. From henna and the traditional wedding procession (zaffeh) to dabke, folk music, traditional clothing, songs, and wedding customs, the event brought different elements of Palestinian heritage together in the heart of one of Palestine’s most historic cities.

More than a cultural performance, the event created a shared community experience. Young people, families, volunteers, cultural groups, and local institutions came together to celebrate traditions that continue to carry stories of identity, belonging, and collective memory. Holding the event within the Old City added another dimension to the experience, connecting living cultural practices with the historic spaces in which generations of Palestinian families have lived and celebrated.

The initiative reached approximately 2,000 people, transforming the Old City into a vibrant community space where heritage could be experienced rather than simply remembered. Young volunteers also played an active role in bringing the event to life, demonstrating how youth can contribute to preserving Palestinian cultural heritage and introducing it to new generations in engaging and interactive ways.

The event was made possible through broad community collaboration involving Riwaq, Yalla Nablus, Yalla Project, Al-Orjwan, Jabal Al-Nar Scout Club, Asaker Al-Shamal Folkloric Group, Al-Zaytouna/Abu Darrar Folkloric Group, Buthoor for Development and Culture, Nablus Municipality, and Nablus Governorate. Local media outlets Asdaa and Sawt Al-Mahaba also supported media coverage, while a local real estate company contributed to the operation of municipal facilities used during the event.

Through “A Journey Through Time,” the Palestinian wedding became more than a celebration. It became a way of bringing generations together, strengthening young people’s connection to their cultural identity, and keeping traditions alive through participation and shared experience.

In the heart of Nablus Old City, heritage was not only displayed — it was lived, shared, and passed forward.
