A Port Without Ships” Initiative in Gaza
The initiative documents Gaza’s seaport and its historical and human memory, recovering stories connected to the sea, fishers, boats, trade, travel, and everyday life along the Palestinian coast.
It collects oral testimonies, photographs, documents, and archival materials relating to the port and old Gaza in cooperation with fishers, elders, historians, researchers, and custodians of memory. It also documents Palestinian maritime stories across history and explores the sea as a source of livelihood, life, and connection and as a witness to the city’s transformations and the experiences of its people.
The initiative includes educational visits to archaeological, historical, and tourism sites and museums across the Gaza Strip. Young people produce films, photographs, written materials, digital maps, and creative content that communicate their historical and civilisational significance.
By creating opportunities for research, photography, filmmaking, and storytelling, the initiative protects Gaza’s cultural and maritime memory from disappearance, strengthens younger generations’ relationship with their city and sea, and carries the Palestinian story from Gaza’s shore to the world.
