Treasures of Palestine Camp – Exploring Heritage, Identity and Self

Sharek Youth Forum implemented the Treasures of Palestine Camp at the archaeological site of Khirbet Al-Tireh in Ramallah, bringing together adolescent girls and boys for a three-day immersive learning experience. The camp was held under the patronage of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Monastery of St. Stephen the Protomartyr.

The camp is part of Sharek’s broader work with adolescents, which aims to create diverse and meaningful experiences through which they can explore their interests, discover their abilities, build confidence, and learn more about themselves and the world around them. By combining learning, exploration, and social interaction, these experiences also strengthen adolescents’ connection to their communities, identity, and cultural heritage.

Over three days, participants stayed overnight at Khirbet Al-Tireh and engaged in a range of hands-on activities. They explored the history and cultural significance of the archaeological site, learned about archaeology and the protection of Palestinian cultural heritage, and participated in practical sessions on public safety and first aid.

Participants also engaged directly with specialists and relevant institutions, including the Tourism and Antiquities Police, gaining a better understanding of their role in protecting archaeological sites and preserving Palestinian cultural heritage.

More than a camp about archaeology, Treasures of Palestine offered adolescents an opportunity to step into a new environment, take on new experiences, build relationships, work as a team, and discover new interests and abilities. The archaeological site became a space for learning and exploration, connecting adolescents with Palestine’s history while encouraging a stronger sense of belonging and responsibility toward their heritage.

The camp concluded with a recognition ceremony celebrating three days of exploration, learning, teamwork, and new friendships.
