“Our Hakoura” Initiative

. “Our Hakoura” Initiative – A Cultural Revival Rooted in the Land
As part of the “Our Hakoura” (حاكورتنا) initiative, the Kafr Ni’ma Youth Council, in collaboration with the Village Council and with the support of the Sharek Youth Forum, distributed over 10,000 seedlings to local families. More than a farming activity, this initiative was designed as a cultural intervention—reviving traditional Palestinian practices of home gardening (hakoura) and reaffirming the community’s deep-rooted connection to the land.
Historically, the hakoura has symbolized more than just a garden; it is a cultural space where families cultivate not only food, but values, stories, and identity. In reintroducing this practice, the initiative celebrates the heritage of self-reliance, sustainability, and land stewardship, which has long been central to Palestinian rural life.
Lina Al-Deek, a member of the village council, reflected on the cultural significance, stating:
“Farming is not just about planting a seedling—it’s about roots that tie us to our identity and our land.”
Through this initiative, the youth council aimed to plant more than trees—it aimed to sow a renewed sense of cultural pride, belonging, and resilience. In each hakoura lies a piece of history, a legacy passed down through generations, now reclaimed by youth and families alike.
By merging environmental sustainability with cultural preservation, “Our Hakoura” serves as a living expression of Palestinian identity—a quiet resistance, a celebration of heritage, and a promise to care for the land that defines us.
